Announcing auditions for Theatre Pro Rata’s summer production Traveling Light, by Lindsay Harris-Friel, directed by Natalie Novacek, and fall production of The Taming of the Shrew, by William Shakespeare, directed by Carin Bratlie.

About Traveling Light:

It's 1967 and Brian Epstein crashes a cemetery, looking to check in to residency. Joe Orton follows him, looking for some tail...or to talk to Brian about the screenplay he's written for the Beatles. (You know, whatever comes first.) They argue rewrites and ponder the making of a man. Some clothes come off. More clothes come off. There's a lot of scrabbling in the dark. Within weeks, both of them would turn up dead. But they might have had this meeting, they might have had this chance. They might each have had something to risk and something to save.

Performance Dates:

July 2010

Rehearsal Dates:

June-July 2010, nights and weekends, 6 days a week.

Cast:

Non AEA.
Three men, one woman.
Dialects required.
$100 stipend paid.

Cast Breakdown:

BRIAN EPSTEIN: 32-33, manager of the world’s most successful pop band. Handsome, elegant, Jewish, secretly homosexual, secretly addicted to uppers and downers. Speaks with a very polished, formal upper-class accent to hide his Liverpool roots.

JOE ORTON: 32-33, a playwright who has recently become very successful. Handsome in a rough, cute way. Openly homosexual. Speaks with a Leicester accent, to which he has returned after learning to speak with an upper class accent. Has a slight lisp, which he knows men find sexy; he pronounces his “s” sounds like a “z,” as in “easy” or “leisure.”

OFFICER FOSTER: 33-36. A Women’s Police officer. Mainly responsible for handling prostitutes during arrest procedure. Takes care of her mum by day. Widowed.

MACDONALD: 40, a police officer, senior to FOSTER. Loves structure, language and the workings of the human body.

About The Taming of the Shrew:

The merchant Baptista has two daughters, and decrees that Bianca--the younger and fairer of the two--cannot be married before her strong-willed sister, Katherina. The student Lucentio falls hard for Bianca, and convinces his friend Petruchio to woo the shrew and get her out of the way. Kate will have none of it. The battle of wits has begun.
