What's up with Theatre Pro Rata?

Pro Rata is a small professional theater company based in Minneapolis, MN, dedicated to creating text-based, actor-centered, process-driven theater. Or rather, we're interested in how we do theater, not what kind of theater it is (that's why we do edgy black comedies as well as Shakespeare). We believe the creative process is important, and if the process is meaningful, the end product will be meaningful as well.

Who are you?

Pro Rata has a core company of artists. We regularly work with actors, technicians and designers who are new to us or the Twin Cities. Our company members also work at theaters around the Twin Cities like The Guthrie, Theatre de la Jeune Lune, and Park Square Theatre.

What does the name mean?

The term Pro Rata is Latin for "in proportion." It is commonly used to refer to the distribution of shares or liabilities by an exactly calculable factor. We chose the name to reflect the collaborative nature of our theater -- meaning that we succeed in proportion to the communal efforts of a group of committed artists.

How can I buy tickets?

We accept cash, check or credit at the box office on the night of the performance. If you'd like to make a reservation, you can call our box office line at 612-874-9321 or reserve your tickets online.

What's the Sliding Scale?

Our tickets are on a Sliding Scale from $14-$41. You can name your price, whatever you'd like to pay inside that range. No, you don't need to prove your income, or show up with a W2. You just tell us what you would like to pay for seeing the show.

What's PWYC?

We have a Pay What You Can performance for every show, usually on a Monday night in the middle of the run. For this performance there are no restrictions on price. If you want to pay a buck, you can pay a buck. If you want to pay 50 of them, you can do that, too.

Where do you perform?

Like many small theaters in the Twin Cities, Pro Rata is nomadic. We do not own our own space, but rather rent our venue from another company, The Gremlin Theater. We are pleased to be joining Gremlin in their new home at 2400 University Avenue in St. Paul. Click here for directions!

Why should I join your mailing list?

We offer ticket specials, sneak peeks and other fun stuff to our email list. We won't give away your address and we don't over saturate your inbox. If you want to get all the latest information from Pro Rata, you should sign up!

What can I do to support Pro Rata?

Donating
Pro Rata is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. That means that your donation is 100% tax deductible. Pro Rata produces quality theater on a shoe-string budget, but we cannot do it without your financial support. Your contribution helps make our work possible.

Volunteering
Pro Rata is always looking for eager folks who might like to lend a hand. We need volunteers to help build and tear down the set, distribute postcards, sew costumes, construct props and all sorts of things that make our shows come to life. An extra bonus? Volunteers can see the show for free! Contact us at info@theatreprorata.org for more information.

On their home page type in Theatre Pro Rata as your charity to support, click 'verify', then you're all set to start searching and raising money with us. We ask that your respect the rules of the site and use it honestly to help us raise additional funds to reinvest in our shows.

Do you offer classes?

We offer classroom residencies and private training. Click here for more information.

I've written a script, will you consider it?

We do not accept unsolicited scripts; however we will preview a treatment. If you would like to submit a one page treatment and/or short (no longer than 10 pages) sample of the play, you can email a Word document to info@theatreprorata.org.

Are you hiring?

Although we do not offer permanent employment, we regularly independently contract artists and designers to work on our productions. You can submit a resume at any time, or you can check our Work With Us page for up-to-date job postings.

How do you become a Company Member with Pro Rata?

The process of joining Theatre Pro Rata as a Company Member begins with nomination. All company members have the opportunity to nominate individuals. We look for people who fit our aesthetic, are enthusiastic collaborators, and have demonstrated a level of excellence in their work with us in the past.
